Construction Debris Removal in Sacramento: Cost, Loads & Landfill Fees

8 min readBy NorCal Earthworks

Short answer

Construction debris removal in Sacramento runs $400 to $1,000 per dump-truck load of 10 to 14 cubic yards for typical mixed demolition and construction waste. Concrete-only loads run $300 to $600, clean fill dirt $250 to $450, and a 20-yard bin rental $400 to $700 per week with one dump included. The price has two parts: the crew and truck that load and drive it, and the tipping fee the facility charges by weight and material class. Sacramento County's Kiefer Landfill publishes those tipping fees. On the schedule effective January 1, 2026, mixed debris is $61.35 per ton, mixed inerts are $28.45 per ton, certified clean soil is $11.60 per ton, and clean concrete without rebar is free. Sorting the load to hit the cheaper classes is where most of the savings live. The service itself is described on the hauling and debris removal page and, for city-limits jobs, hauling and debris removal in Sacramento.

Construction debris removal cost by load type

These are the all-in per-load ranges we quote in the Sacramento region for a standard 10 to 14 cubic yard dump truck, including loading, haul, and the dump fee. Distance from the site to the facility and how much hand-loading the site needs move a job within the range.

What Kiefer Landfill charges: the published 2026 schedule

Kiefer Landfill on Kiefer Boulevard is Sacramento County's landfill and the default destination for mixed demolition debris from Sacramento-area jobs. The County publishes the fee schedule (https://wmr.saccounty.gov/content/wmr/us/en/county-facilities/kiefer-landfill/fees.html); the rates below are from the schedule effective January 1, 2026. These are the facility's tipping fees only. Our per-load price adds the loading, the truck, and the drive.

What we haul, and what we do not

Our hauling is built around jobsite material. Whether the search term is construction waste removal, construction trash pickup, or demolition waste removal, this is the load list:

  • Construction debris: wood framing, drywall, roofing, siding, and flooring from structure demolition
  • Concrete and masonry: slabs, footings, block, brick, and hardscape from demo or grading; see concrete removal for the break-out side
  • Dirt and soil: grading cut, excavation spoils, and backfill surplus, priced per cubic yard on the dirt removal page
  • Mixed C&D loads from full demolition sites
  • Brush and green waste from land clearing, chipped on site where that reduces volume
  • Post-fire debris: ash and charred material from controlled burns or wildfire cleanup prep
  • Not hauled: asbestos-containing material, lead paint debris, and hazardous waste, which need a licensed abatement contractor and separate disposal
  • Not hauled: household furniture, appliances, and general junk; a junk-removal service is the right call for those

How the tipping fee becomes your per-load price

The facility charges by the ton, so weight matters more than volume. Solid concrete weighs roughly two tons per cubic yard, and broken slab still runs well over a ton per yard, so a few yards of driveway can weigh more than a full box of framing lumber. That is why a concrete-only load prices differently from a mixed load even though both fill the same truck. On top of the tipping fee, the per-load number covers the crew that loads the material, the truck's round trip, and the haul distance; a Land Park side yard with hand-loading and a 36-inch gate takes longer to load than an open Natomas lot. Sorting also changes which rate applies: a load that mixes a little wood into clean concrete tips at the mixed-inert or mixed-debris rate instead of the no-fee clean-inert rate. The broader demolition cost picture, including permit fees, is in the Sacramento demolition and earthwork cost benchmarks.

Sorting and recycling: the cheapest way to lower the bill

  • Keep concrete separate and rebar-free where possible: clean concrete, asphalt, brick, and tile tip at no fee at Kiefer, versus $28.45 per ton mixed with rebar or $61.35 per ton buried in mixed debris
  • Concrete recyclers such as Forward Recycling, Republic Services, and Cal-Waste crush clean concrete back into aggregate base; the concrete removal cost guide covers the recycling path
  • Separate scrap steel and rebar: clean metals are no-fee at Kiefer and can be sold for scrap, which offsets haul cost
  • Keep dirt out of the debris pile: certified clean soil tips at $11.60 per ton, and mixed loads with dirt in them get classified at the debris rate
  • Chip brush on site: green waste is the most expensive vegetation class by the ton, so reducing volume and weight before the haul matters
  • On permitted City of Sacramento jobs, CALGreen sets a 65 percent diversion floor for construction and demolition debris, and sorted weight tickets are how the close-out documents it

Full-service haul, dumpster, or included in the demo scope?

On most full demolition, clearing, or grading jobs we quote hauling inside the scope, so there is no separate per-load bill. When material is already sitting on the property, such as accumulated debris, a prior contractor's demo pile, or stockpiled brush, we price a standalone load-out by estimated load count with a one-load minimum. A roll-off dumpster is the cheaper route only when you have the labor and the days to fill it yourself; the tradeoffs are in dumpster vs full-service debris removal. Scheduling for standalone hauls with staged material is usually 2 to 5 business days, with same-day or next-day possible when a crew is free.

Outside Sacramento County

The same load classes apply, but the facility and its schedule change. Placer County jobs typically tip at the Western Placer Waste Management Authority facility between Roseville and Lincoln (https://www.wpwma.com), and Yolo County jobs go to the Yolo County Central Landfill on County Road 28H outside Woodland. Foothill parcels in El Dorado and Nevada counties add haul time to the nearest transfer station, which shows up as truck time rather than tipping fee. Confirm the destination and its rate as part of the estimate; the county service-area pages for Placer, El Dorado, Yolo, and Nevada list each county's permit and air-district authorities.

Frequently asked questions

How much does construction debris removal cost in Sacramento?

Expect $400 to $1,000 per standard dump-truck load of 10 to 14 cubic yards for mixed construction and demolition debris. Concrete-only loads run $300 to $600 because clean concrete recycles cheaply, and clean fill dirt runs $250 to $450 per load. Standalone haul jobs usually carry a one-load minimum of $350 to $500. The per-load price covers loading labor, truck time, and the tipping fee at the facility.

What does Kiefer Landfill charge per ton?

On the Sacramento County fee schedule effective January 1, 2026, municipal solid waste and mixed debris is $61.35 per ton, mixed inerts are $28.45 per ton, certified clean soil is $11.60 per ton, and green waste, clean wood, and tree stumps are $115.65 per ton, with a $45 minimum weight charge. Clean concrete without rebar, asphalt, brick, tile, and clean metals are accepted at no fee. Verify current rates on the County's fee page before budgeting.

Is construction waste removal the same as junk removal?

No. Junk removal services take furniture, appliances, and household items. Construction debris removal, also called construction waste removal or demolition waste removal, handles the material that comes off a jobsite: concrete, framing lumber, drywall, roofing, dirt, and mixed demolition debris. We are a demolition and earthwork contractor, so we haul jobsite material and not household junk.

Why does sorting the debris lower the price?

Because the facility charges by material class. Mixed debris tips at $61.35 per ton at Kiefer, mixed inerts at $28.45, and clean concrete without rebar at no charge. A load that keeps concrete, dirt, metal, and green waste separate from mixed debris pays the lower rate on each stream, and scrap metal can offset cost. Sorting on site before the truck loads is the single biggest lever on a demolition disposal bill.

Do you haul asbestos or hazardous material?

No. Asbestos-containing material requires a licensed abatement contractor and a hazardous waste transporter, and it is disposed of as manifested special-handling waste. In Sacramento County, SMAQMD regulates asbestos notification before demolition. We coordinate around the abatement scope and haul the remaining clean debris.
